There was a drought. The drought was so bad that the farmers moved to the cities and the economy crumpled. The people rallied against the dictatorship like many others have in the Arab world recently. The dictator didn't really like that so he started killing the dissenters. The war essentially started as dictator royal family vs. citizens.

It has spilled over to the western world for a few reasons. One, there has been a mass migration of these people to Europe which has a million different allies and treaties all over. Two, terrorist groups the West wants to get rid of have taken the unrest as an opportunity to gain new members and resources. Three, Russia, who the west isn't a huge fan of, has been trying to help the dictator that started the whole thing.
