It's not rubbish it's fact - you may disagree that it is the right policy to follow but nothing I said about austerity is factually inaccurate.

Again though the point still stands - do you agree that we need to eliminate the deficit?

It's all very well railing against the Government but when you ring fence the NHS, foreign aid, education and don't want to cut anymore from the army, the police. Where else do you turn? Local government and welfare effectively are the only large departments left.

Cheap Chinese steel is not a new problem - it is easy to think it is because the media and politicians have suddenly become interested in it. Our government would never be able to pump the requisite cash into our steel industry to compete with the Chinese because they are dumping their steel. The US do it with numerous industries in Latin America.
The responsible way to deal with this is to work with the Chinese to cease dumping.

I read that local authorities buck passing from another MP. It's cookie-cutter press release.
The government are blaming local authorities - in the same way they blame doctors for their own starvation of the NHS.

Legally, local authorities have a duty to provide a statutory library service under the Libraries and Museums Act - this is what the government is hiding behind. But central government is smashing Labour authorities and funding Tory councils. The cuts are imposed by government, and the shortfall in government money to those authorities means they can't provide the most basic services to the most vuilnerable individuals, so they cut the library, and then the Tories blame them for breaking the law.

As for the deficit, perhaps your Government should try as hard to eradicate tax avoidance as much as it does in cutting spending.

French officials are close to getting £380million from Google even though Britain is its biggest market outside the US and employs thousands more people than in France. Paris tax bosses have refused to accept Google's ploy of funnelling its international sales via Dublin to benefit from Ireland's lower tax rate.

In 2015 Amazon's UK business paid £11.9million in tax on £5.3billion worth of sales to British shoppers.A large number of corporations useartificial structuring which is designed to undermine the tax revenues of the UK. Most if not all of the major bookies have their registered offices in places like Malta and Gibralta. When is this government going to go after all this tax avoiding?

As for working with the Chinese, how about turn the ships around and send them back to Beijing?

The Government aren't hiding behind anything - as outlined above - local government is one of the few areas the Government is able to cut from. It is predominatly Labour Councils who get larger sums of money from the government anyway so it is not surprising that they have issued transition funding to councils that receive less government money (by the same logic mostly Tory ones) this year. This is the first time in 6 years that these councils have received transition funding.

Re tax avoidance it wouldn't come close to contributing anything as substantial to the deficit that would mean austerity wouldn't have to happen in much the same way it is now. The Government announced in the Summer Budget last year the largest ever investment by UK government in cutting down on avoidance but notably critics conveniently ignore that.

Furthermore, absolute protectionism is proven not to work as an economic policy. Dumping is a problem - agreed.

You do not solve these issues, however, by recklessly and defensively blocking the Chinese from selling their steel here. There is always a consequence to any action you take - if you block the Chinese from selling their steel it will drive the price of steel up, impacting British businesses and restricting their ability to be competitive in the market place. Prices would effectively become fixed and dictated by a small group of producers - great for the steel industry, bad for the customers who are forced to buy them because the Chinese steel is no longer available.

You don't listen Oliver.. You take central government propaganda and stick to it.

It's not all about cutting...its about generating confidence.

It's all going to be plain for us to see soon though - we will not be in any better position than we were, and you lot will have been cutting back on the worse off for 9 years by then.

You'll struggle to blame Labour again (remember Cameron blamed them for the last world crisis?) But you will try to blame a world crisis.
By then you'll have sold everything off and we'll be in debt to the Chinese too.

What is it you are specifically disagreeing with about what I have said?

It's quite clear that I don't just swallow government propaganda as in this thread I have questioned the worthiness of 2 government policies.

Conservatives...
Not backing a European tighter regulation on Chinese steel imports.
Business secretary not showing his face during massive problems in the steel industry.
Not even joining the talks with Tata.
High business rates.

Again..this affects working people, so unlikely to find a Conservative government helping them.

I would like to see the detail of the proposal to stick tariffs on Chinese steel. It's a convenient headline but I doubt many who use it have researched into the context of these proposals.

It is my understanding that the UK government didn't block higher tariffs on Chinese steel but blocked the attempt to remove the control on duties, meaning the EU would have limitless capacity to charge tariffs on all imported steel, not just that imported from China.

The argument from the Government at the time was pretty reasonable, they don't oppose negotiating on the tariffs but were against the blind removal of the limit as it would expose British businesses to significant increases in costs, many of which would be in the manufacturing industry (which as we know needs all the support it can get).

There was an article published in Business Insider which raises the issue of cheap steel from Europe also hitting the UK steel industry and that it is not solely the Chinese which are causing these issues.

I don't purpose to know a lot about politics but Chinese steel seems to be a low price lost leader to compete with the price of British steel to a point that the British steel industry just can't compete any longer. Which is what's happened.

We all know that lost leaders can't be maintained and that eventually the chinese steel prices will go up through the roof once they become the biggest steel market, and then Britain will have to buy more expensive steel from them.

I admit I don't know a lot about the politics behind it all but it makes no sense to me to make all those people redundant and then the goverment having to fork out to keep those people on benifits, probably for the rest of their lives. And lets face it its not just their jobs that there losing but there why of life.

Such a shame that we don't have the money to support our industrial nation better. Eventually all we'll probably have is a load of museums showing us how it used to be.
