I don't agree with the academy proposal - it's stupid. Academies are a good idea for some schools but not for others. It wasn't in the Conservative manifesto therefore I don't see why I should defend it.

Re libraries, library funding is in the hands of local government, not central. Lots of local authorities have managed to keep libraries open whereas others have not. Councils such as Manchester have closed libraries despite receiving higher grants from central govt than Stockport which hasn't closed any.

Similarly Manchester has something like half a billion in reserves.

All is not quite as black and white as it is often presented.

None of this is anything to do with the Tories permanent cost cutting, "all in this together", look after your own policies?

Hands totally clean? I think not.

If you disagree absolutely with reducing public spending then you have a perfectly consistent, if totally fantastical argument. If not, then surely you have to accept that savings have to be made and in this area, local councillors decide what to cut.

However, councils like Manchester have threatened library closures since the first cuts were announced. This isn't about level of cuts it's about political convenience.

d.

Agreed ... it certainly works for some schools according to circumstance, but for others it certainly won't and indeed hasn't. So in Stockport, it has worked for converter academies such as Cheadle High and Hazel Grove High where the results have moved forwards dramatically with true local management ... Sponsored Multi Academy Trusts are where the problems seem to lie to me.

Oliver, this permanent auterity for the worst off is NOT working...your results are showing that.
At some point. You lot need to stop taking it out on the people who need it most...and generate a bit of care and pride again.

Selling off the land registry?

Are these Tories crazy? We're not going to have anything left soo . we're going to be relying on private company, probably foreign owned (probably with some chairperson that's mates with one of the posh boys in government), to tell us who owns our country.

Someone stop them...this is nuts.

I disagree that the austerity isn't working. Remember that austerity is a fiscal policy, not an economic one. The aim of the austerity policy is to eliminate the deficit (something which all parties have pledged to do). The Government has then pledged to go one step further and deliver a surplus in order to start paying down the national debt (albeit in small increments).

The overall goal of austerity is to make the public finances more resilient to shocks.

You either agree with this goal or disagree with it. You can't criticise every policy that cuts public expenditure, without offering alternatives and yet still expect the deficit to be eliminated.

Re the land registry, I am open to hear the arguments for privatisation. It is unhelpful to be dogmatically against these things, if a convincing argument is made.

I am however, yet to hear a convincing argument for privatising the Land registry.

I imagine you can criticise policies that wholly hit those in society least able to afford to take that hit while ignoring the billions of pounds lost taxes, the millions of pounds wasted on ridiculous civil servant roles, I could go on and include the 20% Vat rate (the less money you have, the harder it hits)etc etc but I am at work, so shouldn't be wasting my break on here but that little titbit got you a bite Ollie

This is complete rubbish, and you know it.

This government has delivered nothing but cuts after cuts, to the people who don't need it.
Your destroying the NHS, privatising the bits left, inflicting dangerous cuts on the disabled and young people, taking money out of essential services, whilst watching the banks continue to feed off the country, allow the Chinese to build our nuclear power plants, yet flood the market with cheap steel and lose our jobs.
It seems that if you're a friend of the Tories, you're OK.

You're in massive jepardy over your terribly worked through budget and have a massive black hole in it.

You've even got your excuses lined up for when you don't make any of these financial promises.

I hope at the next election you get figured out. With Williams frankly revolting voting habits,he certainly will.
