Would those better places be where it's someone else's problem, by any chance?

So serenity it shows you don't know anything about the tree. Go ask the hazel grove community council who. Not only asked for it but chose the design. Hazel grove people speaking for hazel grove, the fact you don't like it is irrelevant to those that canvassed people of the time that did.
We were out voted. 5 tory/lab 4 lib dems, i abstained after we lost a vote to get a site visit, something that would have saved HG. Fifty thousand pounds in legal costs this is money that goes into community projects, so no help for the community for over three years, no help for the friends of parks, no help for residents only parking schemes, no help for disabled groups needing funding, no help for scouts groups, brownies, secret garden, royal british legion ,air cadets army cadets, sea cadets etc etc the list is endless and why, so that tory ans lad councillors can grandstand and go against proffessional advice by councillors with little or no experience.

What about a solution that puts it in Sainsbury's backyard, where it belongs and where they wanted it in the first place.

That solution has not been asked for, we can only consider the plans asked for and not anything else.
The council cannot say, by the way if you put it here instead oof there then it will be ok. That is predetermination and is not allowed

It's already on Sainsbury's land, what more do you want?

Jenny - I have to take issue with some of the points you have raised. First you accuse me of point scoring with Cllr Hogg when I believe I have been pretty apolitical in my discussions around Sainsburys - in contrast to his approach. Furthermore, you accuse me of incompetence yet I have not heard a satisfactory argument as to why I should not have challenges the Planning Officer's assertion that a large housing development and theoretical mitigation measures are sufficient grounds to make any traffic increase immaterial. It's not incompetence - it's scrutiny.

Cllr Hogg - there are no Labour councillors on the Stepping Hill Area Committee. Only Conservative and Liberal Democrat. As for the issue around the suggested costs, I will fight tooth and nail to protect our budget as I believe it is a flawed system to take a vengeful retributive approach such as that you have described.

I know a lot about the tree Kevin I looked clearly at the plans for Sainsbury's at the time and there was no iron tree. The tree was decided on many years later but without any consultation that I ever saw at least - I clearly wasn't one of the chosen few that was asked. Such a shame as I know exactly what I'd have said.

As for the Hazel Grove community council who are exactly are they Kevin? Who are these "Hazel Grove people speaking for Hazel Grove". There used to be meetings for local people to have a say but I don't know of any anymore. Tell me if I'm wrong Kevin only I'd love to come along and participate.

It's not really Oliver or anyone else that's to blame here is it Kevin it's the system that's not working properly isn't it. Any system that penalizes the community for the thoughts and actions of any councillor can't be right. You yourself clearly seem to want to vote against the petrol station like you wanted to vote against Sainsbury's being built in the first place but it's obvious that you feel that there's no point in resisting due to regulations. So are we to forever just say go-ahead do what you want.

All the things you listed are clearly worthwhile causes (albeit I'm sure that the parking for residents came out of ASDA's budget so I was told). But how can any councillor be expected to make a sound judgement if they have to base it on what it will cost another part of the community. I know it's all about balancing the budget but when you see some of the daft things that the council spend money on - well I ask you Kevin.

No it would be utilising the petrol stations that were there but are being shut down Jenny, and about not erecting new ones to replace them in already congested polluted areas.

But this is not really about a need for a petrol station in the Grove is it, there's petrol stations not that far away all along the A6. It's about people wanting cheaper priced petrol which is why it's unfair for those living close by. If there was a real need for a new petrol station because there were none then I'd have to agree that we needed one. But that's simply not the case is it.

Residents parking is investigated, surveyed and officertime put against the delegated highways budget exactly the budget that will be lost among others when costs are awarded against us for a perverse decision against the planning rules and against proffessional advice and yes oliver there only tories no lab but that makes it worse
