Shut roads so kids can play?

Stockport Express story...

Love this idea in principle - wouldn't work in practice where I live though - too many curmudgeons! It would be great to let the children run around the roads for a bit, but I don't know who'd stand there blowing the whistle when a car wanted to pass...dinner lady experience needed for that job I reckon!

Think I must be a curmudgeon. I don't want chavvy kids squawking and screaming outside my house, dropping crisp packets and kicking footballs at windows.

Plenty of parks for them to play at without blighting my neighbourhood.

Well, plenty of parks but parents tend to need to 'take' them if they're younger. Gone are the days when kids could play independently and learn about the world immediately surrounding them. Not wrapping them in cotton wool and not saying there's a peado hiding behind every tree, more to do with increases in traffic and specifically, increases in idiots driving as cars have become more affordable etc. Shame because independent play is important for child development in my opinion.

Well said Fi-nix independant play IS vital part of a childs development!!!! And kids should be able to play on their own street as many of the parks are now crap and ruined by teenagers who have been taught no respaect for others and equipment......

Amen.

It wouldn't be 2 minutes until your car is dented due to footballs.

Send them to play on the motorway instead (or maybe a relief road), well away from my house...

Ridiculous idea.

Lazy parents need to stop watching television and take their kids to the park.

When I was a kid I played in the streets and the park and my preference was park every time, why would children prefer to play in a street when they have parks full of fields and playgrounds with swings frames etc?
I take my kids every weekend and now it's getting lighter at night I take thrm after school if they've been good.
Why would you want your kids playing in the street full of pot holes anyway!

Miserable gits! Were none of you children once? Did you all come out of the womb as fully formed, independent people? Lazy parents should take their kids to the park? You're not really getting the point here Torky. Children can go to the park if it's close enough to walk and there aren't busy roads and it isn't full of scuds looking for a fight. Parents do take children to the park but they can't be there every minute of the day and night and any way, the point is, the parent is present - so not independent is it?

Children used to roam up and and down, calling for each other and playing with other children from the road. Can't do that now, so limited to being carted around to each others houses for play-dates (hate that expression) or sticking to their own gardens if they're lucky enough to have one. No independence skills being learnt there, is there?

You reap what you sow people. This current generation of children will be paying for your old age care and pensions and there's not going to be a right lot of money in the pot to pay for your incontinence knickers if the working population at that time can't walk out the front door without a pensioner to hold their hands for them and see them safe to their car doors!

Im totally with you Fi-nix but I best not type too much before the forum goes on a rant at me for defending and looking out for kids..."Independant play" was the key words in your post. Not all kids want to go park every single day they want to knock on for friends ride bikes around and just PLAY
