GMP Doorstep/Bogus Callers

Info I have received via GMP - helpful for you all to be aware of some bogus callers operating in the area, especially if you are/know elderly people living in Hazel Grove.

1)Alarm company ringing householders saying that crime levels are high in the area (which is increasing fear of crime and not actually true). They infer that they are working with police/council to improve security by offering “free” security equipment such as a burglar alarm (or charge nominal £1). They try to book an appointment and then do the hard sell trying to get the householder to sign up to very costly and long monitoring costs.
Quoting prices ranging from £4,000 - £6.000.

2)During a period of time the offender has attended the victims home address and made the householder give offender either cheques or cash, stating that the she needs various things, i.e. funeral plans, medical operations. This is not the case and the offender has made off with said cash, which is a substantial amount.

White Irish female named Selina, 60-70 yrs old, 5'4" - 5'6" tall, large build, grey short hair, described as wearing sandals and always wears 2 jackets

If anyone would like the particular reports emailing to them, I have documents from GMP which I am free to circulate. Just let me know!

Thanks Oliver.

It's sad that these scumbags prey on peoples' trust.

Only recently I went to the house behind ours to talk about a tree that needed pruning, and was answered by the elderly guy who lives there.
He was jovial and friendly, and left me in the hall whilst he finished his phone call. All the time I was stood there hoping he didn't do it with other callers! Our gardens are very long, so it's unlikely he'd have ever seen me before.

Shows off the generation gaps - I wouldn't let anyone in the house who I didn't know, and I'm twice the size of my neighbour!
Although I agree, there's more fear of crime than actual crime.

it,s high time all doorstep/cold calling was outlawed. The utility companies should all put the meters in places where they can be read without coming to your door, and any work that needs to be done should be pre arranged by letter.

there are going to be certain areas in stockport that cold calling will not be allowed but i dont think hazel grove is one of them.

The No Cold Callers Zones include :- South Reddish,Bramall,Woodley,Edgeley and Cheadle. There should be a lot more.
