In 1912, working in the cellar of the disused Bald Faced Stag, racing car driver Kenelm Lee Guinness developed a spark plug that could withstand very high engine temperatures. Its applicability to fast cars, motorcycles and aeroplanes made the invention an immediate success and KLG became the largest employer in the area, with over 1,400 workers in 1918.(Hidden London, 2014)

The Ford car in this picture would suggest a much later date than 1920, probably at least 1937.

Incidentally, the name KLG stood for Kenelm Lee Guinness, a racing driver who was part of the Guinness brewing family!
