Vernon Primary School is a Primary School in..

The original Vernon Primary School on Park Lane first opened in 1838. It was built by George John Warren, the fifth Lord Vernon, and was a very small one-room school. Once established the school proved increasingly popular as parents realised the benefits of education. The school had been extended several times over the next hundred years. By the 1930’s the school site was not big enough to accommodate all the pupils so in 1938 Cheshire County Council built a new school on Clumber Road. Alongside the primary school the Council built a high school.

Poynton expanded rapidly during the 1950’s and 1960’s. In 1965 a new high school opened on Yew Tree Avenue; Poynton High School. The primary school then split into separate Infant and Junior schools. The Infants moved into the building the high school had used.

Since the mid 1990’s the primary school population in Poynton has been gradually falling and, as part of a County Council review of schools in the local area, the two schools have now amalgamated to re-establish the primary school.

On 1st January 2008 Poynton’s Vernon Infant and Junior Schools amalgamated to become a combined primary school, Vernon Primary School. Joanne Glimmerveen, formerly Head at the Infant school, is now the Headteacher of the Primary School.
