I hadn't realized that the single track swaps sides as it goes - I obviously need to stick my head over more railway bridges! Wonder why they did that?

As you guessed, I'd taken the stretch of shared track from Timperley to Altrincham as a model, though it's significantly shorter than the distance from Cheadle Heath to the Grove. As you say, wholesale track relaying would up the cost.

But it has its attractions: as well as at Hazel Grove Chester Road, there could be stations at Bramhall Moor Lane, Bramhall Lane, Adswood and Cheadle Heath, serving areas with no quick or easy links towards Manchester.

But as there's been little enough adventurous enhancement of public transport in the UK during my lifetime, it's unlikely to start happening now.
