I think there is an issue here with a broader principle - what is a borough council for?

I am of the firm opinion that local authorities ought not to be a lender of last resort - when the banks or shareholders cannot or will not stump up the cash.

It is simply not an appropriate model for local government.

Isn't the loaning of money the business of banks?
Why didnt a bank lend them this money? was it because it was to risky?
Are Stockport Council starting a loan service?
Wont this make bank employees redundant?
And who the hell gave Stockport Council the right to gamble rate payers money on failing businesses, shouldn't this money of been best used to cover the wages of some poor public servant that was made redundant recently?
If this money isnt returned as you say, later this year, are you going to resign for incompetance, thats if you are re-elected.

Don't expect a direct answer anytime soon. Anything prickly and Cllr Hogg runs for the long grass in my experience

so Oliver you would rather County go under than help a very important part of our heritage survive when it is ultimately costing nothing.

What a complete load of crap.

Do you not understand what was written above about it being GUARANTEED? (Ok, I suspect they will only guarantee the sum and not the interest that the council would get but hey ho, you are still ignorant of facts presented to you).

It's not like Councillor Hogg has walked into a casino and slapped 360 monkeys down on red or black FFS.

I hate County, not as much as ManUre or that vile lot that throw money at it but I sure as hell wouldn't want to see them fold.

180k as a GUARANTEED loan which the council will make a percentile mark-up on and help to at least prolong the club seems a smart idea to me.

Both home and away games bring money into the local community, certainly a damn site more than 180k...

Pubs/clubs/hotels/catering/parking/coaches/printers etc.

Stockport County do a lot for the local schools. Even when they were flying high in the Championship players would regularly visit schools giving coaching lessons for FREE and the club would also give kids FREE tickets to games.

I think it is a good 'investment' by SMBC

Is this still so?

Players and managers alike used to come to my school - Danny Begara and Dave Jones I think we met at some point.

No, it's not like that anymore.

Nowadays they get the kids in from the schools to coach the 'players' for free.
