Check the air quality in Hazel Grove Today
11th January 2013 at 3:38PM
The Achilles heel in all of this SEMMMS consultations are the air quality studies that don't appear to be available or been presented for discussion. Probably because numerous new roads planned across the UK have stumbled at the final planning stage when EU air pollution levels have not been met...nor ever will be!!

All across the UK roads are failing to achieve the EU standards for Air quality and these will be a strategic part of the final planning judicial process, already the A6 is way over the legal limits and the extra traffic the road will attract will send it spiralling to unacceptable levels.

The EU legal limit is 40ug/m3, Hazel Grove air quality on 9 Jan 2013 was 61ug/m3 - 50% higher than the legal limit.

Already the EU are taking action....

UK Given Final Warning for Air Pollution Failures | 4 Jun 2010
The European Commission has sent the UK a final written warning over failures to meet European limits for dangerous airborne particles in London.

Particle pollution is understood to be responsible for over 35,000 annual premature deaths across the UK, and over 4,300 in London alone.

The final warning from the Commission follows the start of legal proceedings against the UK in January 2009 for failing to meet air quality standards that came into effect at the end of 2004. During 2009 the UK applied for a time extension, allowed under EU law, for meeting the standards, however the application for the London 'zone' was rejected due to the lack of a concrete plan for cleaning the air.

The next stage of the legal proceedings following the final warning would be action in the European courts, and ultimately fines ranging into hundreds of millions of Euros for Local councils failing to meet the legal limits.

So Yes lets all vote yes for higher pollution, more traffic jams and loss of our countryside, and million euro fines from the EU to repay through taxes or tolls...great vote winners SMBC, CMC and GM!!

Hi   Ian

We had a test tube on a lamp post   outside our houses   a few years ago to measure the polution as a current reading - as we are in the effected zone

It got mysteriuosly removed - so they are aware that   there will be changes in pollution levels   and i can only assume they know what the law is on these matters

But will they make the findings avaialble ?

I will raise this issue   at the next forum meeting and let you know

hi ian, thats very interesting info and as the new part of the a6 will pass the back of my house while i have the current one at the front im highly concerned for my kids health having two roads on either side of my house, some might say why would i live on the a6 now though and not concerned about my kids but all around my house apart from the a6 is fields and countryside,if the road goes ahead i will be sandwiched in between the new and old a6?
i have images of that house on the m62 in leeds lol.
i will definately be asking about pollution readings and what current tests are being done.

you know what the governments answer to this will be,of course..........an increase in fuel tax plus an increase in any other tax they can think of on top.

As there no time indicated on the data you've provided Ian I wonder if these figures take into account the peak time traffic flow and the extra pollution from cars going in and out of local large car parks such as Sainsbury's and Asda at tea time.

Add to that the Hospital car park emptying at 5 plus the congested A6 and the figures in total between 5 and 6 must go through the roof.

Agree with the time point, but I'm sure there
Are air quality points in poynton as well, but still trying to locate these.

The data collectors were confirmed to us at the poynton SEMMMS meeting on the 9th jan, by thre environmental expert, there on the night.

Not sure how we get to see how this and others in the area can be monitored, or if the specialist consultants employed to prepare the case against will initiate their own research.

Anyone with any other info would assist with this very important aspect as SMBC cannot afford a £1m fine!

I've checked the figures today and they seem to be much the same. Still far to high.

I'd love to know how these monitors work and how these figures are worked out.

Surely the high pollution figures for Hazel Grove must play a huge factor against introducing even more traffic to the Grove in the form of this new road.

Surely the powers to be should be looking at ways to reduce traffic pollution (by a new bypass)than increasing the figures even more.
