Sustrans national route 55

National route 55 is planned to link Stoke and Manchester. In the Marple area, it uses Middlewood Way, but until recently the route from Marple to Stockport has been uncertain. This has now been finalised.

From Stockport Road it follows Dale Road down to the Goyt, then along the riverside path as far as the weir and ford. Here, a new bridge will take it into Chadkirk Estate, then down Vale Road to Otterspool Road. From there to Stockport it will use the existing bridleway to Lower Bredbury.

The bridge across the Goyt will provide a most useful additional link. Sustrans also say that there will be a link to Marple Hall School.

Chadkirk bridge over the Goyt is now in place. A few days ago they were completing the access on both sides. Opening scheduled for July 29th (during the Chadkirk festival).

So the current situation is that the link from Marple Hall School via Chadkirk Bridge to Otterspool Road, Chadkirk is essentially complete. There has so far been no progress on the main link from Rose Hill to the bridge though.

went over the new bridge today,it's a really nice job they've done. The path that goes from the end of the bridge to Marple Dale could do with a bit of work though,it is quite muddy in parts and looks like it will get really bad when it rains again. All in all a very nice walk.
