Today I was helping my 14 year old son (year 10 at school or fourth year senior in old money) with some History homework. It focused around the Republicans and the Democrats in the USA, in particular around Hoover and Roosevelt.

I pointed out that he seemed to have done a lot about American history recently so decided to look through his history book for this school year.

We have The Great Depression and the politics around it, we had the first world war from an American perspective, we have prohibition, we have a study of Flappers and the American influences on Europe during this period.

Their next subject is Vietnam

I will need to remember to celebrate Thanksgiving this year as it seems we are now officially the 51st State of the USA

What's wrong with learning about other cultures in the world? Do we really want our kids growing up to be as narrow minded as the average UKIP voter?

Or have I missed something?

Hazel Grove High School by any chance?

My GCSE History course covered the US between the World Wars too. All very interesting stuff and relevant to current affairs today.

In fairness, I remember covering the Weimar Republic & the rise of Nazi Germany, the causes of WWI and WW2 aswell. Prior to that we did the Battle of Isandlwana, the English Civil War etc.

At A Level they covered the Reformation and the Witch Trials. I chose the option to do the History of the British Conservative Party but that course was cancelled due to lack of interest :(

I hasten to add that I did my A Levels at Aquinas - I am not that young that I attended the new Sixth Form at Hazel Grove.

History in my day mainly consisted of kings and queens; which is largely why I earned a Grade 9 fail at o-level. Peterloo did get a mention and I might have paid more attention if I had known then that my 3x great grandfather, from Bullock Smithy, had been injured there.

Jenny!!!!! Wow, you deduced so much from my post, your turned a left wing socialist into a UKIP voter

My point was that the whole of one year is dedicated to American History - not a particularly diverse view of world history in my book

Something like a third of GCSE history is made up of American history. Another third is devoted to British history and the final third to European/Russian etc history. They are all interlinked though. It's a broad brush but it's miles more interesting and relevant than it was in my day (I did O Levels at about the same time the earth cooled!).

Did you enjoy looking through his book Twisted? I think we parents get more out of it than the kids sometimes. education is wasted on the yoof!

GCSE Maths is just as boring and mostly irrelevant, much the same as it ever was!
