Sixth form to reopen at HGHS
4th October 2012 at 10:10AM, Edit: 4th October 2012 at 1:07PM by vulcanman
Had a letter home from school last night indicating that HGHS has been given permission by Government Ministers to open a sixth form from September 2013. Great news, and more choice as far as I am concerned since our experience with CAMSFC was far from good.

This must be connected with the ‘Academy freedoms’ I have heard about since I know that other schools such as Bramhall have wanted to open a sixth form for years.

Went to the open evening tonight, well organised and well presented, the headteacher seems to have a point "you need to choose the school that is right for your child". The school seems has a lot to offer, seems better organised than some of the other schools i have visited. 6th form is definatly a positive point, I wonder what will be on offer and how it will compare to other schools/colleges

Basically, becoming an academy frees the school from LA control. SMBC's policy was not to have sixth forms at the secondary schools in its remit and therefore, now that HGHS is an academy, it has the freedom to set its own policy.

Does HGHS have the ability to cater for additional students?

They'll have to invest in some 6th Form tutors I would guess - secondary and 6th form specialise differently... some of the teachers will be specialist enough in their fields to teach 6th form. I think they would need a degree or equivalent in the subject of teaching I assume?
When I was there a couple of the science teachers had doctorates.

Very much looking forward to this. Thank goodness HGHS had the guts to stand up to this whit-less council and go for academy status. This has brought HGHS a 6th Form, perhaps other schools will see what they have been deprived of by SMBC.

Well Done HGHS...

I attended the first parents meeting in the old youth centre a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like the school have some serious money to invest in a sixth form centre.

This was the main selling point of going "academy" status. In my opinion the only benefit offered. But this is a debate that had already taken place on here so not going to reopen that can of worms.

However once again i see the other side of the pettiness of this school, both pre and post academy. A text went out today reminding all parents that all hats and scarves have to be black. My 11 year old was told to either remove his "charcoal" coloured hat or have it confiscated. This on a day (Friday 30th November) when the temperature never got above zero.

If the new academy Governors want to start making in roads and winning over the doubters like me, they will remove this level of petty bureaucracy and get their teachers to concentrate on teaching instead of enforcing archaic rules and leaving children to suffer. Yes, if you want to stop them wearing football hats etc fine but his hat was Charcoal coloured for Christ sake, blood starting to boil, time to have a lie down

Twisted - mate,
We've had our differences in the past, but I am with you on this one...
